ToSEE 2023: The excellence of knowledge combined with the unique experience

At the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, the 7th international scientific conference ToSee 2023, was held from May 25 until May 27, 2023. The central theme of this conference edition was “Engagement & Empowerment: a Path Toward Sustainable Tourism.”

The conference encourages scientific work and advocates the application of achieved results and new knowledge, through which the Faculty contributes to the discussion at the global level on current topics related to sustainable tourism development. For this reason, the ToSEE 2023 conference represents a multidisciplinary platform that connects the academic community with destination managers, the public sector, students, and experts from practice. The importance of the conference was also recognized by the UNWTO, which included TOSEE 2023 in its calendar of events.

The opening of the conference was held on May 25, 2023. at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Opatija, with welcome speeches by the Dean Sandra Janković, the Conference Program Committee Chair Lorena Bašan, the Rector Snježana Prijić Samaržija and the Representative of UNWTO Margarita Zaera Espinos.

In the plenary sessions, eminent international guests Margarita Zaera Espinos, UNWTO – World Tourism Organization (Madrid);  Faizan Ali, University of South Florida (United States of America); Tina Šegota, University of Greenwich (Great Britain), University of Maribor (Slovenia) and Georg Christian Steckenbauer, Deggendorf Institute of Technology (Germany) held presentations emphasizing different elements that lead towards sustainable tourism.

Marko Perić Co-editor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, moderated the Editors-in-Chief-Panel-Discussion. Editors from leading scientific journals in tourism Dimitrios Buhalis – Tourism Review,  Faizan Ali – Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology, Alan Fyall – Journal of Destination Marketing and Management and Giacomo Del Chiappa – The European Journal of Tourism Research contributed to the discussion by sharing there experiences in management their journal and the process of publishing.

At the conference, 111 authors with 44 scientific papers from 16 countries, including the USA, Cameroon, South Africa, and Turkey, participated. The best papers in two categories were awarded this year: the Ph.D. student paper and the other conference participant paper, rewarded with Samsung tablets given by our partner Samsung. Professor Lorena Bašan, as a Program Committee Chair, presented awards to the authors of awarded papers: Ernest Alang Wung, Ph.D. Candidate, University of Dschang, Cameroon: “Be careful with the attitude of employees in the service industry: Are they affected by tips and tipping practices? ” and  Davor Mikulić, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist, The Institute of Economics Zagreb, Croatia: “The level of integration of Croatian producers in tourism cluster. “

As a part of the ToSEE 2023 conference Ph.D. Workshop entitled “Publishing a Research Paper: Hands-on Workshop” was led by Professor Faizan Ali. As a part of the social program a unique experience, participants took part in an evening experience titled “A Bit of Tradition to Inspire Your Senses, “organized in Stare staze in Kršan, Istria.

The international conference ToSEE 2023 combined excellence in knowledge and a unique participants’ experience inspired by local tradition.
